Gatsby Girl
Sunday, July 02, 2006

Flapper HatI'm a hat girl. I love hats, especially the helmet-like cloches that epitomized the '20s. Though I no longer have the Louise Brooks bob to go along with the hats, I still want to wear them. One of my favorite Flapper Girlcloches from college was a black crocheted number I got from I don't remember where. I still have it in my stash of winter hats, but it's so old and full of cat hair and it's kind of small, so it doesn't fit over my gigantic hair. Good thing I learned to crochet -- now I can make my own. My newest hat is the Gatsby Cloche from Stitch Diva Studios. The pattern comes with three hats: the Gatsby, The Downtown Cloche and a newsboy cap. Next time I want to Gatsby Girlmake the Downtown Cloche, in the same kind of rich red used on the Stitch Diva website. Mmmm...

I also bought Vogue Knitting on the Go: Crocheted Hats which has several cloche and helmet hats for my crocheting pleasure.

Ah! So many hats, so little time. Luckily I have enough yarn.

That's lovely. I've been resisting the temptation to make a felted version. I'm very fond of hats. I don't think enough people wear them these days.

I totally agree with you: not enough hats are being worn these days. Which makes me think of the time I went into a quaint chapeau shop in Chelsea and told the antiquated old dame running things that it's such a shame no one wears hats any more. I was lucky to leave the store with my head in tact, she nearly bit it right off. Must be hungry work, millinery.

What a cute hat! I used to have a vintage hat shaped like that. It was brown angora (not knit tho), with a band and subtle bow. It went perfectly with my flapper-short, curly hair at the time, and ankle length aviator style vintage coat. *sigh* I miss that outfit :)
